Dain II had his son Thorin III Stonehelm succeed him after his death, becoming the King of Erebor and the Iron Hills.An event in the Battle of Five Armies see that entry for more detail: There were no records of any feats in the Iron Hills from then on, but the Dwarves would not abandon their former refuge, with its abundant mine of iron and minerals essential for the craftings and forging of the Dwarves. He maintained a friendship with the Elven Kingdom of North Mirkwood and the City of Dale. As the new King under the Mountain and of the Dwarves of Durin's Folk, Dain II from then on seemed to settle mostly in the Lonely Mountain, as a newly reestablished kingdom with a mountain of wealth. With his forefather Thror being brothers with Gror, Gror's grandson Dain becomes the next in line for kingship. ![]() The line of Thorin ended upon his death and his sister's sons Kili and Fili. ![]() The Dwarves triumphed against their enemies, but Thorin fell in the battle. The Iron Hill army wielded swords, mattocks, and shields, arrayed with boots and iron armor of formidable strength. In the Battle of the Five Armies, Dain II rallied his five hundred Dwarf warriors' army, answering Thorin's plea for aid. Later, upon Erebor's sacking of the Dragon Smaug, many of the Dwarves also sought refuge in the Iron Hills. The army of the Iron Hills was exceptional and renowned that in those years, many believed they were the only force that could rival Sauron's. After the battle, Dain II glanced within Moria's halls and realized that they could not reclaim Durin's folk's lost kingdom yet. He was thirty-two years old, considered young for a Dwarf, and therefore became renowned for his might and defeat of Azog. ![]() Upon seeing the demise of his father, Dain II charged towards Azog and cut off his head. ![]() The Orc commander Azog killed Nain upon the stairs to Moria. The Orc army was intense and unwavering in battle, but when the Dwarven forces of Iron Hills appeared, they became discouraged. In TA 2799, during the last battle in the War of the Dwarves and Orcs, Grór, in his old age, could not participate in the great war and instead sent his son Nain, along with his grandson Dain II Ironfoot. In TA 2665, Grór had a son and named him Nain. And so the Dwarves of Durin lived in its lands for many years. The river called Redwater also courses through Iron Hills, its waters reddish with the presence of iron in the land. The land was an abounding source of various minerals, especially iron, where it gained its name. Being the founder of the realm and a king's son, Grór received the title Lord of the Iron Hills. In TA 2590, Grór built the kin of Durin's settlement in the Iron Hills.
